A vision board trick I learned from my mentor

Yesterday I had my monthly meeting with my mentor. We were discussing the somewhat radical shifts I decided to make in 2022.

My mentor made an interesting comment that made me smile as they spoke about "a habit" they have with their partner.

Once a year or at times of need of improvement, they assign one day to complete a vision board, which is not the usual dream board you may know.

When I heard this comment, I needed to know more.

I was excited about this coincidence because the vision board wasn't the topic on the agenda initially.

Anyway, here is the one unique aspect of this vision board technique that they learned in training by the Stephen Covey company (you know Stephen Covey's bestseller book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People).

Vision board can be used as a business planning tool as well.

It is time to transform our vision board from a dream board to a goal-achievement map.

Here is how you can do it yourself, or use the resources we offer.

Instead of the traditional way of using a spreadsheet to break down your life's vision and long-term goal into annual and short-term goals, we can use our vision board to give our vision the connection to the short-term goal and so make it an actionable vision board.

With this small adjustment, we create a living companion that stimulates inspiration and moves the dreams from the dream world into the action-taking world.

Creating a vision board is easy—and fun! You can create yours with paper and other art materials or digitally using one of many online apps, Pinterest, or even Microsoft OneNote or Evernote. While digital boards are definitely more portable, physical boards are often more inspiring. There's just something about engaging all your senses that makes a tangible vision board more effective.

To create your board, start collecting images representing your biggest goals and dreams. Photos from a favourite family vacation, ads for an expensive dress you want to buy, a playbill for a Broadway show you want to see, or even a dollar figure representing your desired bank account balance are all good ways to visualize your goals. Add them to your new vision board.

Next, be sure to include phrases and quotes that inspire you and keep you going even when things get tough. Sometimes a few words of wisdom from someone you admire is all it takes to get you back on track after a rough spot.

Finally, remember this: Your vision board is a living document. Your dreams and goals will change. Some you will achieve and remove from your board to make room for bigger and better plans. Some will lose their attractiveness and will need to be removed.

You can create levels that will structure the process with the big vision on top, the long-term goals in the middle and the short-term goals underneath.

The key is that you stay connected with the vision board mentally and in your actions. This type of vision board meets the first two habits of highly effective people

1/be proactive

2/act with the end in mind

Now I wish you much joy in the proactive achievement of your dreams!

Stay Strong! Have Fun!
